Red Vein / Faengoch (2025)
Two-channel video with sound, 12’0Made with support from the Colwinston Trust. Commissioned as part of National Gallery 200: Triumph of Art, a project by Jeremy Deller.

Red Vein transforms the slate-scarred landscapes of North Wales into a rhythmic exploration of resilience, memory, and
imagination. Rooted in Dyffryn Nantlle - a rural Welsh-speaking valley shaped by centuries of slate extraction - The work reimagines quarries not just as sites of labour and loss, but as places of potential, creativity, and collective transformation.

In the 1990s and 2000s, these post-industrial spaces became unlikely gathering grounds for free parties - “temporary autonomous zones” where people resisted hardship through critical hedonism and connection. These moments of
rebellion and joy marked a reclaiming of land once carved by exploitation, revealing how pleasure can be a form of protest
and renewal.

Weaving together archival fragments, personal memory, and Welsh-language oral histories, Red Vein layers images and sounds of industrial labour with intimate materials: hand-drawn rave maps, photographic archives, hazy recollections. In doing so, it explores how histories - both inherited and lived - are carried through the body, the land, and
the collective imagination. Through this layered lens, the work asks: how do we remember, resist, and remake the places we
inherit?

Soundtrack: Crwban
Voices: Sandra Jones, Jo Clark, Emma Lewis
Archive material: Gwynedd Archives Service, National Library of Wales Screen and Sound Archive, Jo Clark, Fi Pheeva

Commissioned as part of National Gallery 200: Triumph of Art, a national project by Jeremy Deller.

	Ghost Monuments (2023)
publication, 37 pagesThis is a text, formatted into a fanzine, that explores my relationship with Dyffryn Nantlle - a rural
Welsh-speaking valley heavily impacted by slate mining. Through
layering fragmentary depictions of local industrial and post
industrial histories with personal experiences, I examine the
lasting effects that growing up in this environment have had on
my identity. Some of these fragmentary depictions are of physical
matter: mountains, deep quarries and their waste deposits, metro
tracks in Rotterdam, the carcasses of sheep. Some are of intangible
things: small village rumours, the thumping sounds of illegal
raves nearby, Facebook groups, my dad’s DJ mixes, conversations
with my best friend before he starts another twelve hour
factory shift. This text serves as a reflection on the
power of place and community in shaping a sense of self, and how
these influences are carried into the future.

Comissioned for Green Man Festival, supported by Arts Council Wales and Green Man Trust
Gweni Llwyd’s temporary work Silicon Retina, suspended in Green Man Festival’s pine woods, flips the subterranean into the tree canopy. The moving-image work explores the porous boundary between nature and technology, particularly in the landscape. Following a narrative composed of mechanical vibrations, organic rhythms and biomimetic pulses, the piece acts as a portal to what may be dwelling above and below the surface: from sci-fi cells, worm-like network cables, and bionic creatures, to electrical grids and drainage mazes. It draws similarities between supposedly passive or everyday biological and cyborgian systems, highlighting their wonderfully absurd complexities.

The Water Keeps Changing Color (2022)
Digital video with sound, 5’19

A 3D animated moving image work following salmon fish who, with no water to go to, swim through the air. Their whispering voices abstractly narrate industrial histories and their ecological consequences, blurring fact and ficiton.
